The white cliffs of Møn were formed several millions of years ago when Denmark was covered by the sea. The cliffs were formed by the compression of small chalk based life forms, who resided in the sea in this specific area. Over the millennia’s these animals gradually turned to chalk due to the high pressure and formed the magnificent cliffs which today stand here guarding the sea. Whilst walking around you may get lucky and find a fossil of a squid or a mussel.
The white cliffs of Møn are 7 km long and at one point 128 m. above sea level. The cliffs are divided into several various areas which together create one of the most picturesque images in Denmark. A view that is constantly changing based on the claim of the sea, and the beating of Mother Nature as it grows in its natural beauty. Every year 20-40 cm of the cliffs disappears as the ocean claims more land. During normal weather it is possible to walk along the beach and look up at the cliffs, although sometimes natural obstacles will have formed due to rocks having collapsed.
Due to the unique nature of the area it is possible to experience an exciting and varied form of animal and plant life, I.e. there are 20 different kinds of wild orchids growing by the cliffs. All plants by the cliffs are part of a natural heritage site and may not be taken away, so if you want memorabilia of this part of Denmark remember to bring a camera. No matter the circumstances a walk along the White Cliffs is a wonderful experience for the whole family.
For people travelling by boat The White Cliffs of Møn is a wonderful experience and a good challenge even for the experienced sailor. Anchor down in the sea and wait for when the Cliffs turn a wonderful pink colour as the sun rises. The wind is very unpredictable in this region, so it is a good challenge for any experienced sailor. The Cliffs afford you cover from West and South West, but should the wind be coming from anywhere else, then you are in for a fantastic ride. Due to the special rock formations it is plausible that there is no wind close to land, whilst a bit further out at sea the ships are cruising by at full knot.
The White Cliffs of Møn is an experience regardless of whether you are on boat or on land that you will never forget. |
