
At the
Medieval Centre, you can experience the Middle Ages come alive in Sundkøbing from the year 1396. See the ropemaker, the blacksmith and the other craftsmen in action and be invited into the homes of the many residents. Visit the big medieval market. Watch jousters dicing with death, see catapults being fired and watch the impressive evening shows in July and August. Don’t miss the Medieval Centre’s cosy inn, where you can sample exciting dishes prepared according to medieval recipes.

The
Viking Ships Museum provides a terrific opportunity to experience Viking times, the Viking ships and life at sea. Here you can see five original Viking ships from the 11th century, excavated from Roskilde Fjord. You can also experience the museum’s own boatyard and an archaeological workshop. The museum harbour has a large collection of Viking ships and other Nordic boats. During the summer months, there are several sailing trips each day, and you can try your hand with the oars and sails.

Lejre Experimental Centre has houses and environments from the Stone Age, the Iron Age and Viking times. You can observe live demonstrations, where skilled Viking women and Iron Age men are only too pleased to share their knowledge. Don’t miss the old livestock races either, with aurochs and wild boar. The kids can let off steam in Båldalen (“Camp Fire Valley”), where they can sail dugouts, grind flour, chop wood and much, much more besides.

The Viking fortress of Trelleborg lets you experience Viking times at close quarters. The ring fortress is one of Denmark’s most important and most attractively situated monuments from Viking times and is also the best-preserved fortress of its kind. Observe the impressive remains of the ring fortress, the associated museum and the many exciting activities. A great experience for all the family depicting life in Denmark a thousand years ago.

You can watch the age of chivalry come alive at
Ulvsborg Historiske Værksted (historical workshop)! Try your hand at fencing exercises, archery or ancient games. Visit the fascinating herb garden where you can find herbs, medicinal plants and dye plants. Also pop in on the Skudde sheep with their lambs and Icelandic “landnáms” hens with their chicks.
Don’t miss the castle keep – a unique building of a type not built since the 13th century. The tower will be completed during summer 2007.
