The 800 km route takes you around one of the most beautiful scenery in the country, from the fjords by Western Lillebælt through the South of Funen to the open landscape of Lolland-Falster and the magnificent White Cliffs of Møn (Møns Klint). A wonderful cultural and idyllic vacation lies ahead, with the challenge of camping and traveling which is bound to be an adventure for the entire family. From the closeness of the ocean, the small idyllic islands, the wonderful ferry trips across the various islands and the full of atmosphere village fetes you are in for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. The entire route can be covered by trained athletes in a few weeks. However this depends on the age of children and the fitness of the bicycle riders. Another idea for this trip is to do it in two stages over the course of a year, where you travel half the route first, and then come back and complete the tour the following year, or not, if you don’t want to attempt this hard labour once more.
The Baltic Sea route is divided into 19 stages, and follows where possible national, county or local cycle routes with clear signs indicating where to go. You can commence on this adventure from the anywhere on the route, but this will dictate what you will be able to see. If you want to follow the guidebook instructions, then the route begins by the Danish-German border in Southern Jutland and follow the route until you return back to the border once more on the other side of Jutland. Each stage is between 40 and 50 kilometres long (Approx. 25-31 miles) and a few that 60km long (Approx. 35 Miles), but it wont feel very lengthy due to the wonderful scenery and experiences you will have on this adventure trip. Beautiful scenery, lovely castles, parks and museums all of which will give you an insight into the people who lived in these regions, and therefore are a must see.
There are in addition natural breaks along the route, for example the wonderful ferry trips from island to island south of Funen where the islands are spread out in a vast landscape where the only means of transport is via ferry. This is furthermore true of the Langelandsbæltet.
When we mention earlier that you can do this according to the guidebook, we mean exactly that. There is a brilliant bi-cycle route guide book that has been written specifically for this tour, and it fits into the pocket of any bi- cycle bag! In this map there is a detailed explanation of the route, descriptions of landscape and scenery, and the top attractions in the region. Furthermore, it covers hotel, B&B’s, Pubs/Taverns with rooms, youth hostels, camping resorts, ferries, bike repair shops and other essential details. The guide book can be ordered on this site, or on the routes own website at www.bikeandsea-denmark.com |
